It's a part of Life

My son Dominic asked me this morning if I was going to die when I get old. I said yes, and then he asked if Daddy was going to die too. I said " Yes everyone dies when they get old (not wanting to get into the fact that some people might even die when they are young)but he didn't need to worry about that right now because mommy and daddy aren't going anywhere right now and he will be a grown man with a family of his own when we die". He was very upset and started to cry. He had brought it up again later and it seems to really be bothering him. I would love some advice on this if anyone feels like sharing.

Death is such a hard subject for young kids to understand because it is so untangible for them. We have been unfortunate enough to lose a few pets this past year, right along with a Grandpa and Great Grandma. Having a pet die is very tough, but it seems like it makes the whole "death conversation" easier on a young child. So, now my 2 1/2 year-old daughter talks about Murphy (the cat) being in heaven with Grandpa like it is just no big deal (although the concept of heaven and death are way too big for her to grasp). Hope this helps.

Thank you for visiting my blog, your children are absolutely beautiful!

Jennifer,

Maybe get a few childrens books and read them with him. Talk about the stories and what was happy and sad about them. Let him express his feelings. Talk about Jesus and Heaven and how we will all be there. My prayers are with you as you deal with this situation.
